Before going into battle
Emperor Constantine said
a prayer to God for
protection.
Although the Roman
Empire covered much
land, most of the people
could be found near the
major cities.
In Greece the Olympics
were so important that
major wars stopped to
make time for the games.
Slaves could be found
in Greece, Rome and
Egypt.
The ancient Egyptians
use hieroglyphics to tell
stories of past leaders, as
well as recording the flood
patterns of the Nile River.
Hammurabi was a
Babylonian leader who
wrote down the laws in
order to create order in his
society.
Alexander the Great
would wear the clothes of
people that he conquered
to make them think that
he was one of them and
not an enemy.
Ancient Athens created
the world's first
democracy, where the
people had a say in how
the government was run.
Mesopotamia and Egypt
both had scribes whose
only job was to write down
events that happened
during an emperor's rule.
The geography of
Greece made it very
easy to grow many
grapes and olives.
Most of the people in
Mesopotamia stayed in
close distance to the
rivers.
Most of the territory over
which the Egyptians ruled
was desert, so most
people lived near the
major cities.
The Egyptians had many
gods who were
responsible for ruling over
different parts of the
world.
The Egyptian pharaohs
were buried in tombs with
their riches, their pets and
sometimes even their
slaves.
The people of
Mesopotamia were able to
produce surplus crops by
using irrigation systems.
The Laws of the Twelve
Tables were established
so that all people would
know what the rules of
Rome were.
The land that the Ancient
Greeks occupied was very
mountainous, so most
people lived near the
major city-states.
In Ancient Egypt, the
pharaoh was thought to
be the son of a god.
The mountains in Greece
isolated the individual citystates, which often lead to
wars.
Even though Ancient
Greece was a democracy,
there were still rich and
poor people, as well as
slaves.
