Opening/This document will discuss
Preschoolers are at a stage where much parental care and
guidance is needed and can partake in the formation of
lifestyles for the individual. The preschool age is an age
where many developmental factors take place in a
persons life. This document will discuss the
characteristics of the Pre-school age and the factors that
contribute to

Stage Defined
The typical preschool stage ranges from 3 to 6 years of
age. During this set of ages, children become more
independent and want to learn more and develop more
abilities that they themselves find useful or interesting to
themselves.

Physical Development / Changes
During the preschool age, individuals begin
to get skinnier and taller. An average four
year old is averagely around forty inches
tall and and weigh roughly forty pounds.
they tend to gain 4 to 5 pounds and
become 2-3 inches taller every year during
this stage.

Motor Sensory Development / Changes
Preschoolers start to perform tasks such as dressing themselves in this
stage. Continuing motor sensory development leads to an improved
sense of balance. Toddlers learn to skip and jump in coordinated
manners and this is the age where they are most prone to learn motor
skills such as jumping rope and skating. Their attention spans are
much shorter than the average and they cannot focus on more than
one thing at a time.
Cognitive Development/Change
Language Development
Preschoolers are able to speak in decent
sentences and have developed an awareness of
people not in their immediate environment.
However, preschoolers believe that all people
think with the same mindset as them.
Additionally, preschoolers have short attention
spans, but are able to count, say the alphabet,
and recall specific facts such as address and
phone number.
Erikson’s Psychosocial stage
description
The preschooler’s psychosocial stage is regarded initiative versus guilt.
According to Erickson, preschoolers are also able to initiate their own
learning by seeking out new experiences, and attempting to understand
new concepts. Furthermore, preschool aged children develop a sense of
guilt in response to scolding or criticism. Guilt, if excessive, can make a
preschooler hesitant to try new experiences and learn. Psychological
conditions also become clear at this age. For example, ADHD is a
condition in which an individual has difficulty sustaining attention,
hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Additionally, Autism is a set of
behavioral and and developmental problems. These problems are specific
to every child, and the symptoms range between children. While it is not
a mental disorder, there is no treatment and a child may act differently
from other children.

Major milestones/issues at the stage of
development
Preschool aged children become independent, attempting to do more
things on their own, such as exploring. Preschoolers tend to become
curious and ask questions about their surroundings in an attempt to
learn and understand. It is important for preschool aged children to
interact with people. These interactions shape their personalities and
thought processes. Moreover, preschoolers should be able to complete
several physical tasks, such as ride a tricycle, use safety scissors,
dress and undress, play with other children, and sing. Mental tasks
include telling the difference between genders, recalling details of a
story, and beginning to learn to count and recite the alphabet.

Health Risk at the stage of development
There are several health risks a preschool aged child may suffer. One of the most
common is chickenpox, a viral infection. Chickenpox spreads by contact with the
blisters or through sneezing and coughing. Measle is another viral infection which most
often occurs in late winter and spring. It can be spread in the same way as chickenpox.
Children who do not receive the measles vaccine are most at risk. Another common
infection is pertussis, or whooping cough. This is the sudden onset infection of the
lungs and upper respiratory tract. It is caused by Bordetella pertussis, a bacteria, and
makes it difficult for a child to cough. Pertussis can be identified by the high pitched
whooping sound produced by the cough. Finally, ear infections are common among
preschool aged children. It is caused by either a bacterium or a virus. The infection
occurs when mucus or swollen tissues from a cold block the eustachian tube. The
eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat to help it vent and
drain the middle ear. When this infection causes a blockage, the ear is not well
ventilated and therefore causes pain.
Immunizations Recommendations for age
There are four main immunizations that are
recommended for preschoolers that are usually
given between the ages of four to six. These
immunizations are DTaP, which protect you from
diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, MMR, which
protect you from measles, mumps, and rubella,
the polio immunization, and varicella which
protects you from chicken pox.
Nutrition Considerations
It is recommended for preschoolers to eat
three to four servings of whole grain, one
serving of fruits, vegetables, and meat
each, and five hundred milliliters of milk
daily.

Psychological Care Considerations at the current
stage
Preschoolers are known to being hyperactive and inattentive,
however healthcare providers should always check signs for
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, which is a disorder
defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsive
actions. Symptoms include low attention spans and high levels
of impatience. Another psychological consideration for
preschoolers is autism, which is a social condition that is
defined by a spectrum of different symptoms, including
difficulties in social interactions, difficulties in
communications, and repetitive behavior.
Closing/Conclusion
Preschoolers are at a stage where significant
parental care and guidance is needed. Loving,
affectionate, and patient caregivers help
provide a wonderful life to preschoolers as
they grow and develop.
