The Scream
By Edvard Munch
I was walking along a path with two
friends – the sun was setting –
suddenly the sky turned blood red – I
paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned
on the fence – there was blood and
tongues of fire above the blue-black
fjord and the city – my friends walked
on, and I stood there trembling with
fear – and I sensed an infinite scream
passing through my nature.
Mental Disorders
Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person's thinking,
feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning.
They can be caused by :
Genetics (heredity)
Infections
Brain defects or injury
Prenatal damage
Substance abuse
Other factors: Poor nutrition and
exposure to toxins
• Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or
income.
• Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of
character or poor upbringing.
• Mental illnesses are treatable. Most people diagnosed with a
serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms
by actively participating in individual treatment plan

Depression affects 1 in 10 adults
The U.S. Surgeon General reports that 10 percent of children and adolescents in
the United States suffer from serious emotional and mental disorders
One in four adults—approximately 57.7 million Americans—experience a mental
health disorder in a given year.
Anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD),
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder and phobias,
affect an estimated 40 million individuals.
About 2.4 million Americans live with schizophrenia
Bipolar disorder affects 5.7 million American adults
More than 90 percent of those who die by suicide have a diagnosable mental
disorder.

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see?
Many women in the United States feel pressured to measure up to a certain
social or cultural ideal of beauty, which can lead to poor body image. Women
are constantly bombarded with "Barbie Doll-like" images.
Many young women believe that self-worth, happiness, and success are largely
determined by body measurements and percentage of body fat.
Many females (and some males) do not feel comfortable in their own skin and
feel that they need to live up to someone else’s ideal of beauty. Some of these
become obsessed with their looks and develop eating disorders.
Eating disorders -- such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder –
include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and
food issues. Eating disorders are serious emotional and physical problems that
can have life-threatening consequences for females and males
Binge Eating Disorder
Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a type of eating disorder that is characterized by recurrent binge
eating without the regular use of compensatory measures to counter the binge eating.
Symptoms
• Frequent episodes of eating large quantities of food in short periods of time.
• Feeling out of control over eating behavior during the episode.
• Feeling depressed, guilty, or disgusted by the behavior.
• There are also several behavioral indicators of BED including eating when not hungry, eating
alone because of embarrassment over quantities consumed, eating until uncomfortably full.
Health Consequences of Binge Eating Disorder
The health risks of BED are most commonly those associated with clinical obesity.
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol levels
• Heart disease
• Diabetes mellitus
• Gallbladder disease
• Musculoskeletal problems
Bulimia Nervosa- is
characterized by episodic binge
eating and followed by feelings
of guilt, depression, and selfcondemnation. It is often
associated with measures
taken to prevent weight gain,
such as self-induced vomiting,
the use of laxatives, dieting,
and/or fasting
These are some of the many signs that may indicate whether someone has bulimia nervosa:
• fixation on number of calories consumed
• fixation on and extreme consciousness of weight
• low self-esteem
• low blood pressure
• irregular menstrual cycle
• constant trips to the bathroom
• depression
• People with bulimia nervosa may also exercise to a point that excludes other activities
Purging does NOT prevent weight gain
Purging isn’t effective at getting rid of
calories, which is why most people
suffering with bulimia end up gaining
weight over time. Vomiting immediately
after eating will only eliminate 50% of the
calories consumed at best—and usually
much less. This is because calorie
absorption begins the moment you put
food in the mouth. Laxatives and diuretics
are even less effective. Laxatives get rid of
only 10% of the calories eaten, and
diuretics do nothing at all. You may weigh
less after taking them, but that lower
number on the scale is due to water loss,
not true weight loss.
Anorexia Nervosais characterized by an
abnormal fear of
becoming obese, a
distorted self-image, a
persistent unwillingness to
eat, and dramatic weight
loss
Symptoms
• Resistance to maintaining body weight
at or above a minimally normal weight
for age and height.
• Intense fear of weight gain or being
“fat,” even though underweight.
• Disturbance in the experience of body
weight or shape, undue influence of
weight or shape on self-evaluation, or
denial of the seriousness of low body
weight.
• Loss of menstrual periods in girls and
women post-puberty.
Warning Signs
• Dramatic weight loss.
• Preoccupation with weight, food, calories, fat
grams, and dieting.
• Refusal to eat certain foods, progressing to
restrictions against whole categories of food (e.g.
no carbohydrates, etc.).
• Frequent comments about feeling “fat” or
overweight despite weight loss.
• Anxiety about gaining weight or being “fat.”
• Denial of hunger.
• Development of food rituals (e.g. eating foods in
certain orders, excessive chewing, rearranging
food on a plate).
• Consistent excuses to avoid mealtimes or
situations involving food.
• Excessive, rigid exercise regimen--despite
weather, fatigue, illness, or injury, the need to
“burn off” calories taken in.
• Withdrawal from usual friends and activities.
• In general, behaviors and attitudes indicating that
weight loss, dieting, and control of food are
becoming primary concerns.
Health Consequences of Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa involves self-starvation.
Abnormally slow heart rate and low blood pressure
Reduction of bone density (osteoporosis)
Muscle loss and weakness.
Severe dehydration, which can result in kidney failure.
Fainting, fatigue, and overall weakness.
Dry hair and skin, hair loss is common.
Growth of a downy layer of hair called lanugo all over the body
