Comparing the Sheep Brain to
the Human Brain – A Visual
Guide to Use During Sheep
Brain Dissection Laboratories
Margarita Bracamonte, Ph.D.
Northland Community & Technical College,
East Grand Forks, MN
Several Community and Technical
Colleges currently do not have a human
cadaver laboratory to teach human
anatomy and physiology labs.
To learn about the human brain anatomy,
sheep brains are usually dissected in
anatomy and physiology laboratories at
Community and Technical Colleges.
Therefore, the next slides can be
used during the sheep brain
dissection laboratory to visually
compare the sheep brain to human
brain structures with the goal to
learn the anatomy of the human
brain.
How much does the sheep brain
weight compared to the human brain?
Sheep Brain?
140 grams*
*1 pound = 453.6 grams
Human Brain?
3 - 4 pounds
