Peripheral Nervous
System
(PNS)
PNS
All the nerves outside the brain and spinal
cord
Neurons are organized into bundles of
axons (these are called nerves)
The PNS consists of 2 parts: SOMATIC
and AUTONOMIC
SOMATIC
Sensory nerves that carry info from sense
organs to the brain and spinal cord
Motor nerves that relay commands from
brain and spinal cord to muscles
Perception, voluntary movement, reflexes
AUTONOMIC
Regulates internal organs—heart, lungs,
etc.
Emotions and stress reactions
The ANS is further divided into 2 parts:
SYMPATHETIC—”fight or flight” reactions
PARASYMPATHETIC—return to normal
