THEATRE
AGUS
Ancient Greeks loved live theatre. It was not just entertainment, it
was part of the worship of the gods during religious festivals.
Every town had at least one open-air theatre.
The firsts theatres were invented by the
Greeks.
Comedy, Tragedy,
Satire
The Ancient Greeks invented
three types of plays: tragedies
(sad ending), comedies (happy
ending) and satires (made fun at
real people and events).
Thespis was one of the
most famous and
successful actors in all of
Ancient Greece. In his
honor, actors today are
called thespians.
Famous playwrights:
Aeschylus, Sophocles
and Euripides (tragedy)
and Aristophanes
(comedy).
All the actors were men or boys.

Masks and Costumes
Actors used masks,
wigs, platform boots to
make them look taller
and padded costumes
to make them look fatter
or stronger.
AGUS
The actors’ costumes had to
show clearly who was who. The
masks had very exaggerated
expressions so the audience
could see them from a distance.
The masks were
made of stiffened
fabric or cork and
then painted.
Happy characters
dressed brightly, and
tragic ones wore dark
clothes.
AMPHITHEATRE
❖ The amphitheatres were open-air and built in a semicircular shape on a hillside.
❖ The shape of the theatres gave everyone in the
audience excellent viewing.
❖ Greek theatres had great acoustics by design.
One of the best preserved Greek
theatres is at Epidaurus.

The Dionysus theatre in Athens, is

Greece.

AGUS
The orchestra (dancing
space) was normally circular.
It was a level space where the
chorus would dance, sing,
and interact with the actors
who were on the stage near
the skene.
Theatron
AGUS
The theatron
(viewing-place)
was where the
spectators sat.
Skene
AGUS
The skene (tent) was
the building directly
behind the stage and
was usually decorated
as a palace, temple or
other building,
depending on the
needs of the play.
Parodos
AGUS
The parodos (passageways)
were the paths by which the
chorus and some actors
(such as those representing
messengers or people
returning from abroad) made
their entrances and exits.
FESTIVALS
Festivals were a very
important part of life in
Ancient Greece, and
were a central part of
worshipping the gods.
AGUS
Festivals also included
various competitions, which
were seen as another way of
honouring the gods. There
were competitions in music,
poetry, drama and also
athletics.
They usually included a
procession and a
sacrifice.
