Puppet Vocabulary
Before reading the story “The Origins of the Seasons,” students will create a sock puppet video using the Sock Puppet
App. to review vocabulary and improve reading fluency.
Follow the directions below to complete the activity.
1. You will choose 10 words from “The Origin of the Seasons” retold by Olivia Coolidge on pages 654-661 in
your Holt textbook. These 10 words should be vocabulary with which you are not very familiar. You may
use the sheet provided to write down and define the words that you choose.
2. Select the Sock Puppet App.
3. Select New.
4. Select at least two Characters and touch Next.
5. Select the Background and touch Next.
6. Select the Props and Scenery and touch Next.
7. You will then record one of the puppets reading the sentence with the unknown vocabulary word and then
asking the other puppet the meaning of the vocabulary word.
***Note: The arrow is pointing to the speaker, so be sure to click on the sock puppet that you want to
speak.
8. The other puppet will reply with his best guess as to what the word means from context clues in and
surrounding the sentence.
9. Pick one of the puppets to read the vocabulary word definition from a dictionary (print or online). Then
the puppet will use the word in a sentence.
10. The recording will only last 30 seconds in total; so, you may need to script the dialogue before you even
begin.
