Decoding Strategies
“Learning Games”
Stand-Up Rimes Activity
Purpose: reinforce students’ ability to hear the rime
within a two-syllable word as it is spoken aloud
Materials: Magic Rime Cards
Have students sit on rug. After practicing, choose four
students to join you. Have each of the four students
hold a Magic Rime card. Teacher provides a target
word and class determines which student helper has
the Magic Rime inside the word.
What’s My Rime Activity
Purpose: reinforce students’ ability to hear the rime
within a two-syllable word as it is spoken aloud
Materials: Magic Rime Cards
Small group intervention, distribute Magic Rime Cards
to each student, place face up. Teacher provides a
target word and small group determines which student
has the Magic Rime inside the word.
Highlight the Rimes Activity
Purpose: visualizing the onset & the endings
surrounding the Magic Rime
Materials: Magic Rime Cards, lined paper, pencils,
colored pencils, pens, or markers
Holding up one of the Magic Rime Cards and
announcing a two-syllable word that includes that
rime, ask students to write down the word using pencil
for everything and marker for Magic Rime
Rime Word Spelling Activity
Purpose: reinforce students’ mastery of rime
placement in a multisyllabic word, enhance their ability
to be aware of rime placement as they spell
Materials: Rime Word Spelling Sheet
Students fill in the six boxes with chosen Magic Rimes.
Teacher provides a target word and students decide
which rime is inside the target word and write it in the
correct category.
Spelling in the Air Activity
Purpose: reinforce students’ awareness & mastery of
rime placement in a multisyllabic word
Materials: Embedded Rime Cards
Choose a card from pile of Embedded Rime Cards, but
keep it to yourself. Teacher says the target word, hold
up fingers depending upon how many letters are
contained in onset of word. Targeted student will spell
the word.
Rime Hunt Activity
Purpose: reinforce students’ awareness of rimes within
words in connected text.
Materials: A copy of a simple poem for each student
After enjoying a simple poem with students. Ask
students to focus on one word at a time, locating the
rime in each word chosen by the teacher. Have
students circle the rime inside the word, then write it in
the right-hand margin. Students can draw a box
around suffixes, including inflectional endings.
Base Word Constancy Activity
Purpose: familiarize students with the morphemic
structure of multisyllabic words
Materials: Base Word Constancy Sheet
When the base word remains constant it makes it
easier to identify the prefix and suffix in words

Smiles: Making Friends with Multi-Syllabic Words
• Smiles will make long words friendlier & much easier
to read and spell
• Breaking words up into syllables using smiles
Long Vowel Spelling
• Using the Long Vowel Spelling Activity Sheet
• Concentrate on one long vowel per week for 5 weeks
• Start over each 5 weeks
• Students provide words with the selected vowel’s long
sound
• Words are charted by category
Word Juggling Activity
Purpose: allow students to become more flexible in
their use of words in structuring sentences for daily
writing
Choose a relevant word. Teacher designates the
number of words in the sentence. Students are to
create a sentence using the word; they may add an
ending to the target word. Students will identify which
position the target word is located in the sentence
