Ready For Reading
A Deeper Look Into Reading in
Kindergarten
A Typical Day…
• We have a daily 90 minute Reading
block.
• During this reading block your child
participates in whole group and small
group lessons as well as literacy
stations.
Whole Group
• During whole group your child’s
teacher focuses on…
Phonological Awareness
Phonics
High Frequency Words
Comprehension
Vocabulary
Writing
Phonological Awareness
• Is the ability to hear, focus on, and
work with individual sounds.
• During whole group a sample lesson
might be clapping out the sounds in a
word.
• For example: /c/ /a/ /t/
Phonics
• Is the relationship between the sounds
and the letters.
• A sample lesson may be relating the letter
Dd to the sound /d/.
Then having them give a thumbs up to words
beginning with /d/.
For example: dog, mitten, cow, duck, dirt
High Frequency Words
• Are also known as Core Words or Sight
Words.
• These words need to be recognized
instantly without sounding out.
• An example lesson may be holding up the
words like and to. Have children say the
word until they can distinguish between
the two.
Comprehension
• The ability to understand what you are
reading.
• Comprehension skills focus on many
aspects such as generating questions,
using graphic organizers, and summarizing.
• An example lesson would be to create a
story map about The School Bus.
Vocabulary
• These words are chosen because they
normally are not used in everyday
conversation.
• From each story we focus on three words
are chosen. These words are reviewed
every three weeks.
• We help the children to use the words in
everyday situations.
Writing
• During the week we focus on a writing
trait.
• Monday and Tuesday are days that the
teacher models the trait.
• Wednesday the teacher and student share
writing.
• Thursday and Friday the students are
writing independently.
Small Group
• During small group a teacher focuses
on a particular skill with a small group
of students.
• This enables the student more time
with the teacher.
• A teacher is able to work on skills a
student may be struggling to master.
Literacy Stations
• Generally students are partnered or
work with small groups at a center
type activity.
• These can include: word work, letters
and sounds, writing, reading,
listening, computers, big books, Vsmile, and many others.
Theme Test
• After the completion of each Theme
(every 3rd week) students are given a
theme test which assesses each of the
skills taught during this theme.
• These tests help to give progress report
and report card scores.
• This information also aids the teacher in
determining what needs to be revisited.
DIBELS

What Can I Do To Help?
• Use any moment as a “Teachable Moment”
• When walking together point out things
around and ask what sound does that begin
with? What letter makes that sound?
• Read to your child. Talk about the
characters and what happened during the
story.
• Take an interest in your child’s school and
participate when possible!
