Writing Algebraic Expressions
I can write expressions that
include operations with numbers
and variables.
Remember our vocabulary
Variable: a letter that is used to represent a
number. Variables are always lowercase
letters.
Algebraic Expression: a mathematical
phrase that has at least one variable; it can
contain numbers and operation symbols. It
does NOT contain an = sign.
Translating words into math
• In order to translate a word phrase into an
algebraic expression, we must first know
some key word phrases for the basic
operations.
Notes to add to foldable
• Typically, “a number” will indicate your
variable. You can pick which variable you
use in this case.
– Example: four times a number
• Sometimes it will be given a name.
– Examples: Subtract 5 from 2 times w
OR
Add 6 to a number y
How to write multiplication
expressions:
Multiplication should be written side-by-side
with the number always in front of the
variable.
Examples:
4x
1.25n
How to write division
expressions:
Division expressions should be written in
fractional form.
Foldable Examples
1. A number n increased by 4.5
2. 7 times a number x, decreased by 13.
Add these to your foldable
• The difference of six and a number
• A number to the eighth power
• A number x less than fourteen
Add these to your foldable
• Twice a number decreased by one
• Twenty-two increased by the square of a
number x
• Seventeen less than twice the number
• A number decreased by twelve
• Thirty one less than a number x
• A cube of a number b fewer than 25
• The quotient of a number and t
• A number squared less six
• One half the square of a number
• Double the number
• The sum of a and b
• Two-thirds of a number
• Two divided by a number
Real-World Expressions
• Maria saves $25 from her babysitting job
each week. Write an algebraic expression
for the total amount Maria saves after w,
weeks.
• A pizza place charges $10 per pizza, plus
a $2 delivery charge (no matter how many
pizzas you order). Write an algebraic
expression for the total cost of p, pizzas.
Write a phrase for each
expression:
1) x + 5
2) 8x – 1
3) 7 – x
