Objective: Students will be able to:
1.)Define the following terms- variable, expression,
algebraic expression, constant, term, and coefficient
2.) Identify parts of an algebraic expression
3.) Write algebraic expressions for verbal expressions
4.) Write verbal expressions for algebraic expressions
Do Now: Brainstorm a list of key words for each of the following
operations- Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division
Addition- sum of, add, plus, more than,
increased by, total of, greater than, together
Subtraction- difference, less than, less,
subtract, minus, decreased by, fewer than
Multiplication- product, times, multiplied by,
of, twice (x2), double, half
Division- quotient, divided by, ratio
A VARIABLE is a letter that is used in place of
a number.
Sometimes in the directions the variable will
be given a value. This value will replace the
variable in order to solve the equation.
Other times, the variable will not be assigned
a value and you will need to solve the
equation to determine the value of the
variable.
An EXPRESSION is a number sentence
without an equal sign.
An ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION contains at least
one variable, one number, and one operation.
Here is an example:
n+7
A CONSTANT is a number that stands by
itself.
In our previous example n + 7, the number 7
is the constant.
A TERM is each part of an expression that is
separated by an operation.
In our earlier example n + 7, the terms are n
and 7
A COEFFICIENT is a number that is in front of
and attached to a variable.
For example, in the expression 8x + 3
8 is the coefficient
x is the variable
3 is the constant.
Ex: Two less a number = 2 – x
Six more than c
Difference of w and three
Product of nine and b
Five less than s
Sum of v and four
F divided by ten
Three times a number plus sixteen
Eighteen decreased by three times d
Six more than c
6+c
Difference of w and three w - 3
Product of nine and b
9 * b or 9b
Five less than s
s-5
Sum of v and four
v+4
F divided by ten
f/10
Three times a number plus sixteen 3x + 16
Eighteen decreased by three times d 18 - 3d
