ASL 3- Welcome! Please begin in your new teams from yesterday- after
this doorbuster activity, you may sit anywhere again 
 Doorbuster (5-10 min.)- Multiple Meanings practice (please write on scratch
paper, as you did yesterday):Identify 2 English words from the text below that
can have multiple meanings.
 “The report said the men were running from the police for three hours.
They were caught and delivered to the court for a hearing.”
 Now, think of at least 2 other possible meanings, and create a sentence for
each one. Then, write a gloss of the sign you would use for all 3 senses of the
word (example: “I like her” =TO-LIKE, “That shirt is like mine.”= SAME-AS)
- including the original text (create and fill in the chart below). We will sign

Multiple Meaning Signs (MMS)
 ASL learners often struggle with using conceptual
accuracy when translating English.
 This is especially true for English words that can have
more than one meaning.
 Common errors:
 “That is just like this one.” - signed with TO-LIKE – no!
 (should be SAME-AS)
 “Last Friday I was absent.” – signed with LAST – no!
(should be PAST)
Test Preparation-MMS exam:
 You will each find a text excerpt of at least ½ typed page
(from a book, magazine, newspaper, text, online source).
 Choose ten words in the text.
 Create a grid like we just practiced, and complete it for each
of the ten words.
 You will have a total of 50 English sentences- 10 original
sentences, and 40 new sentences.
 You may do 4 new sentences for each of the ten words, or
have more/less based on the word (at least 1 new sentence
for each).
 Composition books: please write these in your books.
Please copy, print, or type out the text excerpt, and glue it
in your composition book. Then, highlight your ten words.
You will show your text and the grid when you sign it to the
class for your exam grade.
