Words with endings like –ed and –ing are
usually listed in the dictionary as part of the
entry for the base word.
Remember that with some base words the
final letter is doubled when –ed or –ing is
added.

So think I will look in the dictionary
to find the word clapped. Since base
words are usually listed, I will drop
the –ed and look for clapp. That word
does not appear in the dictionary. I
remember now that finally letter are
sometimes doubled when –ed or ing is
addded, so I will drop one p and look
for the base word clap.
