What do we do in P1?

Soft start - why we do we do it and what are the
benefits?
•Children feel at ease when transitioning from nursery to P1.
•Children have a chance to apply their new knowledge and skills in a
free environment.
•Children feel relaxed, calm and ready to start to the day.
•Children have a chance to play socially with their peers.
•Children have to make their own choices and decisions.
Literacy
•We learn the sounds in
actions,

songs and characters to help us.
•We practice writing the letters and saying their sound using multi sensory
approaches.
•We use the letters we have learned to build words and blend the sounds together.
•We learn tricky words that cannot be ‘sounded out’.

•Big books and daily stories – look at purposes and features of print.
•Introduce reading books when we know all the sounds of the alphabet and
have learned some ‘tricky words’.
•Introduce ORT characters and stage 1 picture books.
•Progress with reading books at own pace.

•Practise recognising and spelling tricky words.
•Look for words around you – environmental print.
•Play games which require talking and turn taking.
