Squamous Cell Carcinoma of
the Epidermis
By: Blake Hachen
Description
Uncontrolled cell growth in the upper layers of the
skin. Appears as persistent, thick, rough, scaly
patches that can bleed easily. They often look like
warts and sometimes appear as open sores rising out
of the skin with a crusted surface.
Scientific Description
The epidermis is the layer of skin affected most by squamous cell
carcinoma. The epidermis is the surface epithelium of the skin of an
animal, overlying the dermis. It provides a barrier to infection from
environmental pathogens and regulates the amount of water released
into the atmosphere through trans epidermal water loss.
Symptoms
Rough or scaly red patches, which might crust or bleed
Raised growths or lumps, sometimes with a lower area in the center
Open sores that don’t heal or heal and come back
Wart-Like growths
Cause
Much of the damage to DNA in skin cells results from ultraviolet radiation found
in sunlight and in commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds.
Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin occurs when the flat, thin squamous cells in
the outer layer of your skin develop errors in their DNA. Ordinarily, new cells
push older cells toward your skin's surface, and the older cells die and are
sloughed off. DNA errors disrupt this orderly pattern, causing cells to grow out
of control, with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin as the result.
Cure
Surgery
Excision
Curettage and electro desiccation
Mohs surgery
Therapy
Radiation
Cryo
Worst Case Scenario
Untreated squamous cell carcinoma of the skin can
destroy nearby healthy tissue, spread to the lymph
nodes or other organs, and may be fatal, although
this is uncommon.
Facts
More than 1 million cases are diagnosed each year in
the U.S.
8,800 people die from this disease
Incidence of the disease has increased up to 200
percent in the past three decades in the U.S.
