Objectives
• Can I explain the basic functions of a
major organ system. (SPI0707.1.3)
38. Integumentary System (one page)
Integumentary (pg. 218-221)
•
Your skin, hair, and nails make up your
integumentary system.
•
Functions of skin:
1. Protects by keeping water in and foreign particles
out.
2. Nerve endings let you feel things around you.
3. Helps you regulate your body temperature.
4. Helps get rid of wastes, which can be removed in
sweat.
Integumentary System (218-221)
•
Layers of Skin:
1. Epidermis- the outermost layer of skin.
• Most cells in the epidermis are dead.
2. Dermis- the thick layer of skin below the epidermis.
Integumentary System (218-221)
•
•
Hair and nails are made of living and dead cells.
A hair forms at the bottom of a tiny sac called a hair
follicle.
The only living cells in a hair are in the hair follicle.
•
Question:
–
•
•
Why doesn’t it hurt when we get our hair cut? Why
does it hurt when someone pulls our hair?
Hair helps protect skin from ultraviolet light and
keeps particles, such as dust, out of our eyes and
nose.
Nails protect the tips of your fingers and toes.
Hair and Nails
A hair is made up of layers of
dead, tightly packed, keratinfilled cells. In nails, new cells
are produced in the nail root,
just beneath the lunula. The new
cells push older cells toward the
outer edge of the nail.
Drawings
• For each body system, draw and color at
least one organ that belongs in that body
system.
• For example:
– Integumentary = color skin, draw hair and
nails, diagram of the skin
• Use your textbook pictures or the sample
sheet in the folder at your group.

Interesting Facts
Integumentary System:
• As sweat evaporates, the skin cools.
• Skin color is determined by a chemical called melanin. If
a lot of melanin is present, skin is very dark. If little
melanin is present, skin is very light.
• The dead cells in the skin, hair, and nails is filled with a
protein called keratin.
• The skin is the largest organ of the body, covering an
area of about 2 m²!
• Chill bumps: a tiny muscle attached to the hair follicle
contracts. If the follicle contains a hair, the hair stands
up. The lifted hair works like a sweater. They trap warm
air around the body.
• Acne: hormones that cause oil glands in the skin to
make too much oil combine with dead skin cells and
bacteria to clog hair follicles. The result is acne.
