1. Kick off: What contribution to Astronomy
did Newton give us? Why are these laws so
important? Did you get on Stellarium?

Geocentric model the sun and planets revolve around Earth. In
Heliocentric model the earth and other planets revolve around the sun
Retrograde motion occurs when Earth which travels faster than Mars,
passes Mars making Mars appear to go backwards (westward) in the
sky.
Ptolemy showed planets moving in circular orbits around Earth and he
used epicycles.
Copernicus placed the sun at the center of the Solar System, which was
vastly different from the Earth centered theory.
Galileo was able to see the moons of Jupiter orbiting Jupiter, planets are
circular disks not points of light, Venus has phases, moon is not smooth,
and sunspots.
1st path of a planet around the sun is an elipse. 2nd As planets orbits
their orbital rate is determined by the area. Equal area in equal
amounts of time. 3rd The square of the orbital period is equal to the
cube of the distance from the sun.
Math Practice Solution
P2=d3
52=2.93 25=25
102=4.63 100 approximately = 97.3
(10/365) 2=.093
.0272 = .00074
=.093 = .00073

Do problems 1-7 (yes do the math practice!!!)
Can anything travel faster than the
speed of light?
• http://www.popsci.com/science/article/201109/fyi-can-anything-move-faster-light
• The scientists who last month appeared to
have found that certain subatomic particles
can travel faster than light have fine-tuned
their experiment to check whether the
remarkable discovery is correct.
