Physics 031
EARTH and SPACE SCIENCE - II
• This course covers the space science topic areas of traditional
astronomy and astrophysics, i.e. all E&SS topics except Earth science.
• These include (moving outward from Earth) lunar science, solar
science, planetary science, stars and the interstellar medium,
galaxies, and cosmology.
• This course is Part 2 of a set of two courses in Earth & Space Science,
originally sponsored by a NASA Aerospace Workforce Development
program (AWDP) grant, by way of the DC Space Grant Consortium.
• For those who have not had the normal pre-requisite, Physics 030
(Earth and Space Science – I), but have had another similar course
(such as General Astronomy, Physics 010 or 011) we have a
supplementary hand-out, covering the topics in remote sensing, that
are important pre-requisites for this course.
• For those who have not had either Physics 030 or an introductory
astronomy course, but have had two semesters of college-level
physics, we can provide the following Physics 030 topics as hard-copy
handouts:
– The Size and Distance Scale of the Universe
– Origins: How did it All Begin?
– Orbits and Space Flight
