The Center of the
Universe Card-Sort
Directions
The following slides are OUT OF ORDER.
 Please place them in what you think is the
best order on your desk.
 then show it to Mr. Carter and EXPLAIN
how ideas about the center of the
universe have changed over time.

Isaac Newton






English Scientist
AD 1642 –1727
Idea- Gravity
Newton discovered
WHY the planets orbit
the sun… Gravity!
Also the father of
Physics, invented
calculus, 3 Laws, etc.
Also helped develop
the scientific method.
Galileo Galilei





Italian Machinist/Astonomer
AD 1564–1642
Idea- Telescope
Improvements
Galileo improved the
telescope and collected
data to support Copernicus’
Heliocentrism.
He was tried as a heretic by
the roman catholic church
for these “radical” ideas.
Ptolemy





Greek/Roman Astronomer
(lived in Egypt)
Lived AD 90-168
Idea- Geocentrism: The earth
is the center of the universe.
The other planets, Moon, and
Sun orbit the earth in circular
orbits.
Geo= Earth
Centrism= Center
Various Early 20th Century
Astronomers
As telescopes got
better they
discovered the solar
system is part of the
milky way.
 They thought the
center of the milky
way (most likely a
black hole) was the
center of the
universe.

Johannes Kepler
German Astronomer
 Lived AD 1571 – 1630
 Idea- Discovered that
the orbits of the
planets around the
sun are elliptical and
not circular.

Early ideas about the universe
Early peoples knew that the stars, planets, Sun
and Moon “moved.”
 They were able to make calendars and predict
cosmic events like comets.
 They often thought the stars and planets were
demons, gods, demigods, etc.

Various Mid 20th Century
Astronomers
As technology got better
we discovered there are
more galaxies than our
own (more than we can
currently count).
 Ours is near the center, but
some are closer.
 Nothing is at the center of
the universe, because all
matter and energy left that
point because of the Big
Bang.

Nicolaus Copernicus







Polish Astronomer
Lived AD 1473 –1543
Idea- Heliocentrism
Helio- Sun
Centrism – Center
The sun is the center
of the universe.
The planets orbit the
sun in circular orbits.
