First Battle Of The Marne

The Battle
Fought North and East of Paris- Near the banks of the Marne River
Started on September 5, 1914 and ended on September 13, 1914
The battle consisted of the Allied Powers- France and The British Empire Vs. The
Central Powers- Germany.
Allies went on the offense
Wanted to halt German advances
Troop Movement- Germany (Central Powers)
● After The Battle of The Mons, German troops had
already advanced deep into NorthEastern France
● The German army was lead by General Alexander
von Kluck

Paris was prepared for a siege

Siege: Enemy forces surround a town or a building, cutting off essential
supplies with the aim of compelling the surrender of those inside.
● French troops had retreated to the South
of the Marne river

Although, the Commander in Chief Joseph Joffre
decided on risking a counter attack.
Troop Movements, continued
In spite of Joffre’s decision, the French 6th Army under
General Michel-Joseph Maunoury, attacked von Kluck’s 1st
Army on September 6th
Kluck opposed them, causing a 30-mile-gap to occur between
him and the 2nd German Army.
- Allied troops exploited this, they sent in their 5th French
Army and the BEF (British Expeditionary Force)
- The French 5th Army was lead by General Louis Franchet

Maunoury’s forces were reinforced
by 6,000 infantrymen who were
sent to the battle from Paris.
- September 7 and 8th
● D'Esperey’s 5th Army made a
surprise attack, on the night of
September 8th, on the German
2nd Army.
- This resulted in the gap widening even

Impact
The 1st battle of the Marne was very important in shaping the war. With the win it
helped to crush any fears that Germany would have a quick victory. It also caused
Germany to have to face a costly war on 2 different fronts.

battles that happened on the Marne

Memorial that was created on July 18,
1920
