Sui Dynasty (589-618 A.D.)
• Known for the Grand Canal
– Connected northern and southern parts of
China for the 1st time
– Used to travel and to transport goods before
there were railroads
– Still used today
• They tried to conquer nearby lands, but
were defeated and the dynasty ended
The Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.)
• China’s territory
and ideas spread
to India, Korea,
and Japan
• Created a law code
• Equal plots of land
were given to all
males and that
land was taxed
• All males served in
the military
Religion Under the Tang Dynasty
• Empress Wu (only woman to
hold the Chinese throne)
supported Buddhism

gov’t nervous
• Gov’t destroyed Buddhist
shrines and monasteries and
forced 250,000 monks and nuns
to quit
• Population boom forced many
to flee the country—dynasty
was weakend
The Sung Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.)
• Exported gold, silver, and porcelain
• More people started living in cities—
poverty and overcrowding
• Faced constant pressure from northern
invaders (the Mongols)
• Sung rulers paid the Mongols to keep
them out--Sung eventually defeated by the
Mongols
Read pages 220-224. Use the
combination notetaking method
to take down information about
the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Dynasty Comparison Chart
• On a blank sheet of white paper, draw some
kind of chart or graphic organizer for the 5
Chinese dynasties discussed in class. Use
your notes and your textbook to assist with this.
• Your chart or organizer should include historical
facts as well as significant contributions that
each dynasty made to World History.
• Include small pictures to accompany your
information.
Individual Paragraph
• When your chart or organizer is complete,
choose one dynasty that you think made the
most significant contributions. Imagine that the
idiots who write history textbooks want to
reduce the size of the book and will only include
information about one of the Chinese dynasties.
Write a one or two paragraph pitch convincing
the authors why they need to include the
dynasty you chose as being the most
significant.
Exit Ticket
• Based on information from the notes and
information read in the textbook, in which
Chinese Dynasty would you choose to
live? Why did you choose this dynasty
over the others?
