Advanced Placement Overview
•
AP® courses are college-level courses offered in high school
•
AP teachers are trained in national summer institutes
•
Courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses and
updated every 7 years.
•
Students take AP Exams at the end of the course, measuring their mastery
of college-level work
•
A score of 3 or higher on an AP exam can typically earn students college
credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college
AP = Opportunity
•
Students learn rigorous college-level content and skills
•
Taking AP is valued in the college admission process as an indicator of college
preparedness
•
AP courses create a shared high school experience for College Freshmen
•
AP courses are interesting and rewarding academic experiences
•
Opportunity to earn valuable credit and placement in college (amount and type of
credit is college or university varies)
SHS AP Program Priorities
Equity: All SHS students will be taught the skills for success at college levels,
critical thinking, writing, and reading.
Access: All SHS students can take AP courses.
Excellence: SHS students and teachers continue to strive toward academic
excellence.

What’s on the exam?
Exact times and number of questions and writing prompts vary by course
Typically 1/3 is multiple choice and 2/3 is essay
Some essays (depending on course) are Document Based Questions, some are Free
Response Questions, some are Direct Response
Details
Exams are always first 2 weeks of May
Oregon subsidizes cost, currently is $63 per test
Most tests take about 3 hours, (give or take 30 minutes either direction)
We test mostly off-site due to the high number of participants
Why take the exam?
Learn college level skills such as critical thinking, writing, and reading
Earn college credit
Participate in a common experience for many College Freshman

SHS AP Student Outcomes
For the 2015-2016 School Year
AP Scholars: 88
AP Scholars with Honor: 34
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams
taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
AP Scholars with Distinction: 64
Students who earn a 3 or higher on 3 or more AP exams
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams
taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
National AP Scholars: 4
Granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4
on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
SHS AP Program Specialty Courses
Pre-AP
AP Humanities
Integrated AP US History and AP 10th Seminar course. Utilizes Cadet Teachers and flex
time support
AP Seminar
Developed to give all 9th grade students an opportunity to develop critical thinking,
reading and writing skills. Pre-Teaches content for AP World History
Only select schools are approved to provide this course. This course explores the
complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent
perspectives. Based on synthesis of thinking, writing and presentation
(AP Research – coming in Fall of 2018)
Students engage in creating new knowledge through the research, analysis and
presentation process
SHS & AP Diplomas
Advanced Placement International Diploma
Send scores (apply) to at least one international university
Scores of 3 or higher:
2 exams from two different languages (one can be English)
1 exam that offers a global perspective
One exam from science or math
One ore more from any area except from the above
AP Capstone Diploma (Spring of 2018)
Earn a 3 or higher on both Seminar and Research Capstone Exams
Earn a 3 or higher on 4 other AP Exams
