ACADEMIC
PLANNING FOR
EIGHTH GRADE
Eight graders take four core subjects:
 English
 Physical Science
 World Geography
 Math
 Math 8
 Algebra I
 Intensified Algebra I
 Intensified Geometry
In addition to Core:
All 8th graders take Physical Education/Health
• 3 quarters of Physical Education
• 1 quarter of Health
Choosing Electives


You will have two elective periods
They may be filled with:

A language (year long)

Music (year long)

Electives (either one full year course or two semester
courses for each period)
Foreign Language choices:
 Arabic
I & II
 Chinese I & II
 French I & II
 Latin I & II
 Spanish I & II
 Spanish for Fluent Speakers I & II *
*placement test required
Language classes meet daily all year and earn high
school credit.
Arabic and Chinese will be offered via distance
learning.
Students seeking to enroll in the second level of a
language should see their teacher for initials.
Eighth graders may begin/ continue their study of
a musical instrument by selecting one of the
following:
 Beginning Band
 Intermediate Band
 Advanced Band
 Jazz Band
 Orchestra
Eighth grade exploratory courses:
Visual Art
 Theatre Arts
 Guitar
 Life Management
 Chorus
 Computer Applications and Internet Technologies
 Digital Input Technologies
 Technological Systems
 Taking Charge


Journalism – students will learn to produce a
news paper or news broadcast
Advanced Chorus
Guitar

Yearbook – year long course by application only




In this course students produce the yearbook
Students learn about publication writing and
production

High School Courses for Credit
Students may begin earning high school credits in
7th grade
Courses that earn high school credit:
 Foreign Language
 World Geography
 Math (beginning with Algebra I)
You will have the option at the end of each year to
not take the credit AND the grade so that it will
not be included in the GPA

All students are required to pass 6 SOL tests to qualify for a Standard Diploma and
9 to qualify for an Advanced Studies Diploma. If Students who are required to
pass tests for a diploma fail any of those tests, they will be given additional
opportunities to take the test again. Tests will be offered in January, June, and
August.
