Notable Countries of the World
Ok, so a quiz in 4 days, let’s take a look at the
areas of the world you will need to know come
Friday. Remember, all these are on your map!
Countries of the World
Section 1: Africa and Asia
•
Africa is considered the cradle of
civilization. This region is widely
seen as the starting location of
humanity which migrated to other
locations on Earth. Civilizations in
early Egypt and modern day
Morocco will play an important
role in history as we study this
year.
•
Africa is a huge country that
contains many different countries.
It is so large it has almost every
type of land feature on Earth.
•
Although it is extremely large, much
of its land is not good for farming. A
problem when you have the 2nd
largest population on Earth!
Out of Africa
African Slave in History
• Africa will be a important player when we begin talking
about the Age of Exploration and Empire, as it was the
home of the African slave trade.
• Between the 15th and 19th centuries, more than 15
million Africans were transported across the Atlantic
Ocean to be sold as slaves in North and South America.
• Millions of slaves were also transported within the
continent, usually from Central Africa and Madagascar to
North Africa and the European colony of South Africa.
• This represents one of humankind’s worst atrocities, the
enslavement of one group of humans to serve another.
Asian Continent
• Asia is by far the largest
continent on Earth containing
the two largest countries, China
and Russia. It also has the
largest population of any of the
7 continents.
• Asia has a large area of land,
but not all of it is useful.
Some areas are rich in
farmland and natural
resources, other parts are
barren or too cold to live in.
Because of this, much of the
population of Asia is highly
concentrated in limited
areas of space. This can
cause serious problems!
Asia
• Be careful when you think
about Asia. Many of the
peoples that you think are
“Asian” only live in one part
of Asia. Russia and India, as
well as the Middle East are
part of Asia.
• Asia is home to 60% of all
the people on Earth and
growing! It is also home to
almost all the religions of the
world. Asian countries like
China, India, Iran, Japan,
and Mongolia will play a
HUGE part of our study of
world history.
Asia Today
• Asia has often been secluded
from the larger world, but in the
last few centuries has opened
up.
• China has the largest economy
in the world which is
BOOMING. This has often been
the case in history, everyone
has wanted what Asia has for
centuries. Now, Asia wants
what the west has, for good or
bad…
The Continents Continued…

Section 2: Oceania/Southwest Asia,
Australia, and Antarctica
• Australia
The smallest continent, but one of
the largest countries. Most of the
population lives on the coasts as
the center of the country is
desert. Australian began as a
huge prison colony for the
criminals of the British Empire.
• Antarctica
The last fully explored continent
is mostly barren ice.
Temperatures in Antarctica can
be deadly cold. The lowest ever
temperature recorded at the
surface of the Earth (−89.2°C)
was in Antarctica. It has no
permanent settlements, only
research stations.
“The Quiet Lands”
• Many of the continents in this region of
the world had small indigenous
populations perhaps from Australia and
New Guinea and were separated from
other areas of Earth by large oceans.
• Due to this, many of the populations
remained at home and did not leave until
ship technology could allow them to
venture further out into the oceans.
DON’T GO OUT TO EXPLORE THE
OCEAN IN A RICKETY BOAT!!!!
vs
Journey to Antarctica
• Antarctica was not fully explored
until 1921.
• The trek to Antarctica in a boat
was dangerous, resulting in the
possibility of becoming icebound,
or having the polar ice freeze
around your ship! Its that cold!!!
• Now, we have monitoring stations
in Antarctica monitoring global
warming and global temperature
change, some scientists have to
stay there up to 6-8 months at a
time.
Countries of the World
Section 4: North and South America
• You need to know that most of
the North American continent
was discovered by the outside
world late in world history.
But it wasn’t the last, that would
be Antarctica!
• Large populations of
indigenous peoples developed
cultures long before Anglo
explorers arrived in what is
now the USA and Canada.
• You need to know that South
America was home the Maya,
Aztec, and Incans as well as
other advanced cultures early
in human history. Many of
these groups were centered in
Peru, Brazil, and Argentina.
• These groups existed in
modern day Peru, Brazil, and
Argentina. European explorers
will invade these cultures and
almost destroyed them all in
the Age of Discovery
Zones of the Americas
• North America is completely
above the Equator, with most
all of South America being
below this line.
• Due to this, North America
has a temperate climate with
four seasons, where South
America tends to very from
tropical to temperate as you
head further south.
Resources of America
• North America has large areas in the center of
the continent that are prime for farming and lots
of animal resources.
• Southern American countries are rich in natural
resources including wood, ores, and plantlife
and contain most of the remaining Rain Forests
left on Earth.
Final Day: Continents
• You have a quiz in 2 days. I hope you are
looking over your notes and maps by now…
Countries
ofEurope
the World
Section 3:
• Europe is a region that
stretches from the Atlantic
Ocean to the Ural
Mountains (dividing it from
Russia)
• Europe is temperate and
has good farm land, which
lead to large communities
being created across a
large area. Permanent
towns and cities hundreds
of years old can be found
around Europe.
• Europe is known for
having good sea ports
and waterways,
making transportation
easier and allowing
for trade. Travel was
easy!
Europe Highlights
• Despite being rather close together, many of the
regions in Europe developed separately,
resulting in differing languages and cultures.
This has often caused conflict between regions,
leading to wars.
• Europe has many warm areas of temperate
climates including the Mediterranean Region,
which benefits from warm water and weather.
European
Exploration and
Conquest
• Europe established kingdoms
which helped fund trade and
exploration around the world,
leading to the Age of Discovery.
Europeans traveled the world. This
had both good and bad effects. 
• Europe could be considered to be
the most warlike continent, having
a long history of war and conflict
including having started two World
Wars.
Europe Today
• Europe can be counted
as the most diverse place
on Earth, with many
different cultures,
languages and religions
residing close to each
other with little conflict
after WW2.
•Parts of Europe have agreed to join
the European Union (EU)
•This group agrees to common rules
and help each other, as well as
sharing a currency.
European Empires
• Europe has influenced large
areas of the world, more than
most other continents. The
Greek, Roman, German, and
British Empires fueled change
around the world.
• European Empires controlled
area on many other continents,
including: Asia, North America,
South America, Africa, and
Australia.
Blue = Controlled by Europe at
some point in time 
