History
• Oakland Military Institute Founded in
2001 by Governor Edmund G.
Brown, Jr.
• Governor wanted to expand the
model statewide
• Dr. Mark Ryan, OMI Superintendent,
worked with Governor to elicit
support for NVMI from LAUSD Supe
and Board; then Dr. Ryan was
appointed first NVMI Superintendent
• LAUSD Charter proposed and
approved for July 2013 opening
• Conversion from successful North
Valley Charter Academy

The North Valley Military Institute College
Preparatory Academy (NVMI) develops
leaders of character by providing a rigorous
seven-year college preparatory program to
promote excellence in the four pillars of
academics, leadership, citizenship, and
athletics.
