Why has King Tut become one of the
most famous Egyptian Pharaohs in
Egyptian History?
Imagine you woke up in the morning,
and saw an article like this:
“Congress sent home, President Obama
Resigns, New system of government installed.
Washington DC would no longer be the
Capital.”
Unit 4 Lesson 7
A Disruptive Pharaoh
• The mid 1300s BCE,
Amenhotep IV came to power.
• He destroyed buildings
• He destroyed his enemies.
• But he attempted to destroy
something even more
important to the Egyptians:
Unit 4 Lesson 7
Egyptian’s Religious Beliefs
Pre-Akhenaten
• Egyptians worshipped many gods
– Re, the sun god and provider of bountiful harvests
– Thoth, god of knowledge and wisdom
– Horus, Falcon headed god of the sky
– Osiris, god of the underworld
– The gods were connected with nature
Amenhotep outlawed the worship of many gods.
He ordered the worship of:
Aten – the all powerful
sun-god.
He tried to destroy all memories of the old
gods, carving out their names in writings,
and defaced the images of the gods in
Temples.
He even changed his own name from
Amenhotep to Akhenaten (The Spirit of Aten)
There is debate about why Akhenaton changed the Egyptian
Religion.
• Some say he did it for power
• Others say it was because he truly believed in the new
religion!
Wanted More Power
Egyptian priests held a lot of
power. By destroying the gods of
the priests, Akhenaton destroyed
their power. By creating a new
religion, he became the only
person with religious authority. No
longer would there be multiple
priests, each dedicated to
different gods. Under Akhenaton,
there would be one authority.
True Believer
Akhenaton took great risks
changing the religion. It could
have cost him everything. By
claiming that there was only one
god, and it was the sun god, he
diminished his power, because
he could not be worshipped as a
god. (Even the images of him
depict him with a belly, and less
god-like than other Pharaohs.)
Unit 4 Lesson 7
His name was
Tutankhamen
Tutankhamen became
Pharaoh at the age of 9,
and died just 10 years later.
He worked like Akhenaton, only in reverse.
Where Akhenaton destroyed the old religion,
Tutankhamen restored it
Unit 4 Lesson 7
His death remains one of the
true mysteries of Ancient
History!
Some say Murder, others say
disease!
• A man by the name of
Howard Carter discovered
Tutankhamen’s tomb in the
Valley of the Kings in 1922.
• It was almost completely in
tact, and became a
sensation.
• It is still recognized as one of
the greatest archeological
finds in history.
