1. Amarna Small town on the Nile between Thebes and the Pyramids where the Amarna
Tablets were found. Akhenaten will locate his new city near Amarna.
2. Amarna Tablets Cuneiform tablets that told of the pharaoh Akhenaten. They contained
messages asking the pharaoh to send help to Syria and Palestine.
3. Amenhotep III Father of Amenhotep IV. Built Egypt into a great empire.
4. Amenhotep IV Name of Akhenaten before he changed it.
5. Karnak In Thebes where many of the ancient temples and monuments were located.
Amon’s temple was located in Karnak.
6. Amon’s Temple The most important temple at the whole complex of Karnak. A statue of
Amon was placed inside the temple and was worshipped by priests and members of the
royal family.
7. Queen Tiy Wife of Amenhotep III and mother of Akhenaten.
8. Nefertiti Wife of Akhenaten.
9. Aten The sun disc. God which gained prominence during the reign of Amenhotep III.
Akhenaten will make it his only god.
10. Ra The sun god. The main god of the New Kingdom. (Amon-Ra) Sometimes Re.
11. co-regent Having two rulers at one time. This usually happened as a father was
transferring power to his son.
12. Akhenaten Amenhotep IV’s new name. “the hand of the aten” “he who is beneficial to
the aten”
13. Akhetaten Akhenaten’s new city that was located near Amarna. “the horizon of the sun
disk”
14. Ay Chief advisor of Akhenaten. Will later become a pharaoh.
15. Horemheb Commander of Akhenaten’s armies. Will later become the last pharaoh of
the 18th dynasty.

17. vassal states places like Palestine, Syria, and Nubia which sent tribute and offerings to
Egypt.
