PEACE OF
AUGSBURG
Emily Agresta, Sara Skobac, Lily Smith
What happened?
1. Why did it happen?: The Peace of Augsburg was
established because there was religious conflict between the Lutherans
and the Catholics, and this would help them compromise.
2. Where did it happen?: The Peace of Augsburg was established in
Augsburg, Germany.
3. What was the end result?: The end result was "partial
religious freedom". Because of the Peace of Augsburg, each Prince was
allowed to choose either Catholicism or Lutheranism for his subjects
to practice. Also, Germany was then known as a religiously divided
country.
Who was involved?
■ Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V ,who was Catholic signed the
Peace of Augsburg in 1555
■ After many battles between the Lutherans and
the Catholics, Charles V arranged "The Diet"
to establish the Peace of Augsburg.
■ However, he didn't support the religious compromise so he
didn't attend the meeting.
■ Because he didn't attend the meeting, he sent his brother,
Ferdinand I to settle all of the questions.
■ This relates to the Counter-Reformation because a lot of
beliefs went against the Protestants
Conclusion:
Why was the Peace of Augsburg important?
■ The Peace of Augsburg allowed the state princes to choose what religion
their subjects could practice, Catholicism or Lutheranism.
■ It was an important part of the Counter Reformation because it brought some peace
between the Catholics and the Lutherans, and now they could coexist.
■ Although the Peace of Augsburg didn't satisfy either side of the deal completely, it
saved Germany from having internal conflicts for over 50 years.
