Trench Warfare
A World War I military strategy of

separated by a thin strip of bombed-out
territory, strewn with barbed wire &
land mines, called no-man’s land.
Treaty of Versailles
1919 Treaty ending World War I that
required Germany to pay huge war
reparations and established the
League of Nations. The U.S. senate
opposed the League and rejected the
Treaty. It is often listed as one of the
main reasons for the rise of Hitlerism
and World War II.

A military alliance formed
by Italy and Germany in
1936. It was later joined
by Japan, Hungary,
Romania, and Bulgaria.
Central Powers
A World War I alliance
that included AustriaHungary, Germany, the
Ottoman Empire (Turkey),
and Bulgaria.
Watergate
A scandal in which President
Richard M. Nixon authorized the
cover-up of a break-in at the
Democratic National committee
headquarters. It led to Nixon’s
resignation in 1974.
Reaganomics
President Ronal Reagan’s
economic program. It was based
on large tax cuts to encourage
business investment, drastic cuts
in government regulation, and
increased military spending.
Cuban Missile Crisis
1962 standoff between the U.S. and
the Soviet Union in which the Soviets
agreed to remove missiles from Cuba
if the U.S. promised not to invade the
island. It was followed by an easing
of Cold War tensions.
Terrorism
The unlawful use or threatened use of force
or violence by a person or an organized group
against people or property with the intention
of intimidating or coercing societies or
governments, often for ideological or political
reasons. Examples of terrorist acts are the
attack on the World Trade Center, bombing
of embassies & airliners, and suicide bombing
of public places.
Isolationism
National policy of avoiding
involvement in the affairs of other
nations. The United States
adopted an isolationist policy
prior to its involvement in both
World Wars.
Nationalism
National pride or loyalty. It was
one of the major causes of unrest
in Europe and of the start of
World War I.
Guerrilla Warfare
Type of fighting in which soldiers
use swift hit-and-run attacks to
wear down the enemy. It proved
particularly effective when
employed by the Vietcong against
U.S. troops in the Vietnam War.
