Czechoslovakia Fall…
Austria was Hitler’s first target
Majority of people German’s,
many of whom favored
unification with Germany
Troops marched into Austria
unopposed
Next up is Czechoslovakia,
German’s living in an area called
the Sudetenland along the
boarder
Wanted for living space and
natural resources
Britain and France promise to
protect Czechoslovakia
Neville Chamberlain signs Munich
Agreement
SU Declares Neutrality
Germany now wants Poland
Hitler uses propaganda to persuade German
people that the Poles are mistreating Germans
Invading Poland could make Russia mad and it
would most likely cause Britain and France to
declare war against Germany
Plot twist- Stalin signs a non-aggression pact with
Hitler… second secret pact to divide Poland

While this was happening German
tanks were rolling across the country
causing their own set of problems
Invasion first appearance of the new
German tactic of Blitzkrieg or
lightning war
Made use of advances in technology
(faster better planes and tanks),
completely crushed opposition
Poland, Britain, and France declare
war on Germany
Soviet Union also attacks and grabs
some territory. Within the month
Poland no longer existed and WWII
had begun…

April 9, 1940 Hitler invades Denmark and Norway, next
Belgium and Luxembourg
Stalin occupies eastern Poland, annexes Estonia,
Latvia, and Lithuania
Allies vs Axis (Italy, Germany, Japan)
Germany works toward taking over France
Is able to occupy the North of France, now only Great
Britain is free from German control
Summer of 1940, bombing of Britain
Britain remains free, US realizes it must
soon help its friend

lend you weapons (replaces Cash and Carry policy)
Want to help GB fight off the Germans
Also give some weapons to USSR
1940’s German U-boats are back again
1941, German U-boats attacking US ships, US sailors
given permission to fight back

Both countries pledge to work
for disarmament, selfdetermination, economic
cooperation, and freedom of
the seas. Also, calls for a United
Nations
Allies are formed, 26 nations
fighting against the Axis Powers
