The Lightning War
• September 1st 1939, Hitler sent his Army into
Poland.
• France & Great Britain declared war on
Germany
• World War II had begun
Germany and Russia Prepare to invade
Poland
The Lightning War
• The Germans called the offensive a Blitzkrieg or “lightning
war”
• Poland was easily overwhelmed, Russia Invaded Poland as
well and took over the other half of the country.
• Hitler would also attack, Denmark, Finland, and Norway.
• Soon after, The Netherlands, Belgium were also
overwhelmed.
• Germany would now focus on France

• The Maginot Line- a string of concrete bunkers
along the German Border
• The French did not want a repeat of trench
warfare during WWI.

The Battle Of Dunkirk
• With the collapse of
Belgium, Allied troops were
forced to retreat to the Port
of Dunkirk.
• They were now trapped
between the advancing
Germans and the English
Channel.
• The Entire French and
British Armies were in
danger of being wiped out.

• All available ships, both
military and private were
called to evacuate the
troops.
• Crossing the Channel again
and again, more than
30,000 French & British
troops were moved to
safety.
• Known as the Miracle at
Dunkirk.
The Fall Of France
• On June 14, 1940 Germans Marched into
Paris.
• The French formally surrender. Stunned by the
German Blitzkrieg.
• Germany would now turn their attention to
Great Britain.
