Section One: Hitler’s Lightning War
I. Germany Sparks a New War in Europe
A. Germany’s Lightning War
•
After Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia, turned attention
toward Poland
•
Europe assumed Hitler would leave Poland alone in fear
of angering Soviet Union
•
But Hitler and Stalin made secret pact to divide Poland
b/w themselves
•
Sept. 1st 1939- Germany invaded Poland
• new style of warfare called blitzkrieg- “lightning war” of
fast moving airplanes/tanks followed by full invasion
• Sept. 3rd- France/Britain declared war on Germany, but too
late for Poland
• Soviets annexed eastern ½ of Poland leaving western ½ to
Hitler
B. The Phony War

after declaring war, France/Britain stationed troops along Maginot Linesystem of fortification along French/German border
•
waited for Germans to attack, but nothing happened- newspaper called it
the “phony war”

II. The Fall of France
A. The End of the Phony War
•
May 1940- Hitler launched attack through the
Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg to keep Allies
occupied
•
Meanwhile sent even larger force through Ardennes
mountains to attack France
•
French surprised, retreat to beaches at Dunkirk,
port city near Belgian border
•
French army faced complete destruction
• 850 British ships (navy, fishing boats, yachts, row boats)
rescue 338,000 French soldiers
• June 14th, 1940- Germany takes Paris, French leaders
surrendered, northern France occupied
• Charles De Gaulle, French general, set up gov’t in exile
in London and focused on re-conquering France
