Other important concepts...
•
•
•
•
Fiber, of course
Whole grains, vegetables, and fruits
Mediterranean diet???
Fish replaces meat 2-3 times/week (Good
evidence that fish consumption protects
from strokes)
• Olive oil instead
Get in the Zone...
• Balance, moderation of carbs, fats, proteins
• Mixed evidence pro/con for high protein diets
• Personal experience is pretty convincing!
(Look around Palmer and you will see!)
• Key is maintaining fiber, minerals and
vitamins (Increase your veggies)
Nutrition, The BIGGER Picture
• Issues surrounding pt’s nutrition potential:
– Poverty-1 in 10 of elderly pts are poor
– Physical limitation-getting to the store, cooking
– Oral Health-Missing teeth or poorly fitting
dentures
– Depression-life threatening!
– Vision-Can’t cook or read labels
– Education-Poor choices
Solutions….
• Poverty: Meals on Wheels-hot & delivered
• Physical limitations: Assessment;
Strength/ROM exercises/buddy system
• Oral Health-Screening; Referral for dental
care
• Vision-Screening; Referral for vision care
• Depression-Screening; referral for
supportive care
Primary Recommendations:
(Evidence-based)
• Drink Water-It’s free!
• Take supplements, or focus on nutrient
dense foods with CA++, B and D vitamins
• Vitamins A, E, and C (antioxidants)
• More “live” foods (veggies); if teeth are OK
• Juicers are our friends
• Balance, moderation (watch fat intake)
Dieting and the Elderly
• Diets tend to decrease muscle mass
• If weight is regained, fatty tissue is gained
• Dieting for weight reduction is to be
recommended ONLY along with physical
activity (moderate, sustainable)
• Think nutrient dense
• Water and fiber
Colon Cancer Prevention
•
•
•
•
1 in 17 people get colon cancer in the US
55,000 deaths/year in US alone
Almost all colon cancer is in people over 50
High fat, low fiber diet, & alcohol increase
risks
• RECOMMEND: low fat, high fiber, drug
free
(Am. Cancer Soc. 1999. Colon CA)
