Expansion
• 1803 Louisiana Purchase- Doubles the size of the
United States
• Erie Canal- makes New York City a major sea
port
• Lowell Massachusetts- built for industry
• Manifest Destiny- many believed it was the their
right to expand to the Pacific Ocean
• Cheap Land & gold- cause huge movements of
settlers to move west
• Transcontinental railroad – helps people move
goods and provides transportation
