What is Appeasement?
Definitions: To appease
“To bring peace”
“To quiet or calm”
Put simply, appeasement is a policy followed by the
British Government in the 1930’s.
Its aim was to negotiate with aggressive foreign powers
or nations in order to prevent war.
War In Europe

German expansion
– Hitler annexed
(took over) Austria
– Claimed the
Sudetenland

Part of
Czechoslovakia
– Hitler planned to
unite all German
speaking people

Munich Conference


P.Telfer
Leaders of Britain, France, Italy, and Germany
met in Munich in 1938
Using appeasement, Britain and France
agreed to give Hitler Czechoslovakia and Hitler
promised he would seek no further territory
Supports Appeasement:
P.Telfer
He believed that:
•
Germany had been badly
treated by the Allies after WWI
(Treaty of Versailles)
•
by agreeing to some of the
demands being made by Hitler and
Mussolini, he could avoid a
European war.
Neville Chamberlain:
British Prime Minister,
1937 - 1940
P.Telfer
Against Appeasement
Winston Churchill
British politician will become British
Prime Minister, May 1940 (after
Chamberlain)
Churchill repeatedly warned the British Government
of the dangers of appeasing Hitler’s Germany.
He believed the policy of appeasement was cowardly and gave away too much to
aggressive powers.
