



AXIS forces driven into Tunisia.
 This allowed ALLIES to leap
into Italy.

 Forces overwhelm Italy in a
month.

1943 -- Mussolini is
overthrown!!
THE RED ARMY RESISTS
The Soviets were able to stall Nazi’s outside out
Leningrad.
 Hitler looks to advance from the South and take
Stalingrad

 This city is named after whom…?

One of the costliest battles of
WWII.
 Nazi’s surrounded the city.

 Soviets then surrounded them.
Street-by-street conflict
 Germans were trapped and
surrendered in 1943.

 300,000 killed or wounded.
 SOVIETS go on offensive.
INVASION OF FRANCE

1944, ALLIES are
ready to open a
second front in Europe.
 Invasion of France
 Must organize troops &
supplies

The ALLIES would
choose June 6, 1944 to
begin the operation.
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower
D-Day June 6, 1944 ---- “Day of Days”
ALLIED paratroopers
were dropped behind
enemy lines.
 In the Dawn, 176,000
troops were carries by
boat to the shores of
Normandy.

 Germans occupied the
beach and hills.
 Machine gun fire and
underwater mines greeted
the ALLIES.

Slow crawl through the
enemy forces.
Omaha Beach
The ALLIES suffered great
losses.
 Broke through German
forces!!
 Moved towards Paris to end
Hitler’s reign.
 By August 25th, ALLIES had
retaken Paris.

 “FRANCE IS FREE!”

