How did Hitler get to power?
How did Hitler go from being the
leader of a small party who was in jail
to dictator of Europe in only 10
years?
As a young child, Hitler was
quite a normal boy. He went to
a Church school and even sang
in the choir.
He was not very academic and
preferred subjects like art and
PE.
When the outbreak of WW1 was
announced, Hitler was ecstatic. He
joined the army at once. He later said
that it was the first place that he truly
felt like he belonged.
Hitler leaves the trenches in
1918, furious that the war has
ended, and joins the intelligence
core
When he gets out of
prison he decided to
try to get voted into
power instead of
using violence again.
He joins the NSDAP movement, a
right wing Fascist political group,
and becomes the propaganda
minister

During a year in prison he writes
Mein Kampf. This lays out all Hitler’s
ideas, including Lebensraum (living
space for Germans),
Grossdeutschland (Greater Germany)
and blaming Jews for German
suffering.
He attempts the Munich Putsch
in 1923, which fails. This is a
violent attempt to take over the
government.

The bars show the unemployment
in Germany. The Nazi badges
show how many votes Hitler
received in election.
As unemployment got worse,
Hitler’s ideas got more popular.
1929 was a real turning point.
Unemployment rose quickly and
so did Hitler’s support.

und Brot)
Hitler was invited into power by Von Papen. Hindenburg, the President and an
old war hero, did not think much of Hitler. But they hoped that they could use
Hitler in power as he was so popular with the people. They thought that they
could control him...

If you were Hitler, newly in power,
how would you attack the Treaty of
Versailles?
Remember, if you are too aggressive too quickly,
all of the countries will turn on you again. In
1933, you do not yet have a strong military
force or economy.
