America’s involvement in WWII brought an end to the Great
Depression. Factories and workers were needed to produce war
materials to win the war.
Thousands of women worked in factories (defense plants) ie: Rosie
the Riveter
Americans at home supported the war by rationing and conserving
goods (Ration/Red Books, Victory Gardens, Victory Bonds,
conserving gasoline, food, & metal)
The need for workers temporarily broke down racial barriers (hiring
in defense plants) although discrimination continued.
While many Japanese served the military, others were treated with
distrust and prejudice (due to the attack on Pearl Harbor) and were
forced into Internment Camps.
The Holocaust
The Holocaust is an example of prejudice and discrimination taken to
the extreme.
Anti-Semitism is the hatred of Jews.
Aryan Supremacy is the belief that blond, blue-eyed individuals are the
supreme race.
The Holocaust was a systematic attempt to rid Europe of all Jews.
Tactics used were:
Boycott of Jewish stores
Threats
Segregation
Imprisonment and killing of Jews and others in Concentration Camps
•The Liberation (freeing) of Jews and others took place near the end of
WWII by Allied troops.
