THE DIGITIZATION
OF ALL
INDUSTRIES:
WHAT DOES IT
MEAN?
PROFESSOR PETER KA WALEK
ALLIANCE MANCHESTER BUSINESS SCHOOL
UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER, UK
[email protected]
CONTENTS
1. Let’s start with traffic lights.
2. Digitization – it’s the software, stupid!
• Issues of software provenance and quality become paramount.
• New or extended partner relations (IT vendors are critical to your business)
• You might find Network Effects taking hold in some part of your business.
3. Examples of digitization in industry
• The automotive sector
• The financial sector
• Universities
4. Conclusion – a more software intensive future.
DRIVERS
1. Pricing – open source commoditizing many sectors
2. Cloud & competition over pricing
3. Chip speed/ Moore’s Law – of course
4. Big Data – more forms of data and more value in data (more sources too –
Internet of Things)
5. Artificial Intelligence – now well established
6. Distributed Ledgers – manifold applications e.g. supply chain, legal, payments

• Sales functions,
• Logistics,
• Retail platforms,
• Business intelligence,
• Payment platforms,

The accelerationist view. (Washington Post article).
1. Anything that can be digitized will be.
2. Your job has a significant chance of being eliminated.
3. Life will be so affordable that survival won’t necessitate having a job.
4. Your fate and destiny will be in your own hands as never before.
5. The distinction between man and machine will become increasingly unclear.
NORDHAUS
• Famed Yale economist considered “accelerationist” view that the economy is
entering an era of rare or unprecedented growth.
• “an ever-increasing pace of improvements cascade through the economy”
• That this is due to computation and artificial intelligence.
• Find the case unproven, and “not near”.
• …. but at least this idea is now subject to serious scrutiny.
Now, those traffic
lights…..
Autonomous Intersections:: Constant Problem Solving
Through Unique Traffic Conditions.
AUTONOMOUS INTERSECTIONS
2. Digitization – it’s
software, stupid
Issues of software provenance and
quality become paramount.
New or extended partner relations (IT
vendors are critical to your business)
You might find Network Effects
taking hold in some part of your
business.
GERMAN STUDY
“Power is to the social sciences what energy is to
physics.”
Bertrand Russell.
IT AND POWER
Good control of IT is essential for an executive seeking to maintain
power in a business.
Good control of IT is essential to achieve Key Performance
Indicators KPI’s.
EFFECTS OF IT ON THE
ORGANIZATION
"…the ratio of CEO pay to average worker pay has increased from 70 in 1990 to 300 in 2005,
and much of this growth is linked with the greater use of IT….”
Brynjolfsson & McAfee, MIT, ‘Race Against the Machine’ 2011.
Why?
• Centralised decision-making – more information and more decisions at the top of the company.
• Standardised processes that can be centrally managed.
• Structural effects (including business networks, outsourcing, M&A)
“IT has changed traditional bureaucratic hierarchy. Now the executive can
know about everything … even my sales … even the number of trucks that
wait in a depot thousands of miles away. I do not rely on middle managers
and blah blah for these things. I am only limited by my time and the needs of
my sphere of influence. So I stay at the strategic level but then suddenly I
dive deep and take data from the system to know the operations. And I ask
tough questions. Then everyone knows that I can govern the operations even
when I am too busy to go there.”
3. Examples of
digitization in industry
AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR
Mapping
• Originally thought of as an enhancement to the car, it has become key.
• Biggest use of a satellite navigation system = best satellite navigation system.
• Google versus Tom Tom versus HERE
• Audi, BMW and Daimler spent $3bn to acquire HERE
• Playing catch-up?
AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR
Mapping leads to autonomous cars
• Google already has more than 2,102,047 miles of autonomous car road use
(September 2016).
• Tesla has more than 100,000,000 miles of Autopilot use.
• Systems get better with every mile of use (Artificial Intelligence).
• Will transform automotive from product to service market.
FINANCIAL SECTOR
Antony Jenkins, former CEO of Barclays Bank “I believe that in twenty years time,
we may not need banks at all” (BBC, 2016).
Analysis of three technologies.
1. Peer-to-peer lending, which is a form of matching market and likely to
continue to improve with the development of increasingly intelligent
computing. Funding Circle, Lending Club and Zopa are examples.
2. Online (sometimes foreign) exchange which is a form of disintermediating
ledger. Again, the technology will develop through increasing network
externalities and the acquisition of greater data will drive greater intelligence.
3. Distributed public ledger technology (DLT), that enables secure and
transparent transactions of many types (e.g. financial, legal) without the
involvement of a third-party.
UNIVERSITY SECTOR
In 2014, one third of college students in degree-granting U.S.
institutions took at least one course online
Online initiatives include
edX, a partnership of Harvard University and MIT;
Coursera university consortium;
Udacity, a Stanford spin-out.
Very amenable to network externalities and the founders of
Coursera and Udacity were all AI professors.
4. Conclusion – a more
software intensive future
Pace of change speeding up, not slowing down.
Scope is broadening, not narrowing.
• Issues of software provenance and quality become paramount.
• New or extended partner relations (IT vendors are critical to your business)
• You might find Network Effects taking hold in some part of your business.
It is a new challenge.
There is data, this is not hype.
More technological business, more software-intensive business, these are key.
Functionality
Quality
Governance
Business Model Innovation – maybe jargon, but useful at this time.
