M.I.R. mobile intelligence robot will compete in the IEEE 2006 region 5 robotic competition.
This is a Fall 2005 senior project by computer science (CS), electrical computer engineering
(ECE), and electrical engineering (EE) students. Jason Abbett (CS), Devon Berry (CS),
Michael Hall (ECE), Jeff Croxell (ECE), and Eddie Inlow (EE) are the students working on
this project. The competition consists of a replica warehouse (layout shown to the right) with
four rooms on each side. The robot will have to move containers. (soda cans) There will be
four different colored containers, red, blue, green, and yellow, placed in the four “incoming”
rooms. (A – D) The robot must identify the container and carry it to the correct “outgoing”
room. (1 – 4) Room 1 is for the red container, room 2 for the blue, 3 for green, and 4 for
yellow. MIR must correctly place as many of these containers as possible in 3 minutes. The
fastest teams will enter the final round where their robots will have to avoid mistaking
workers (Barbie dolls with colored coveralls) for containers. There will be the same number
of containers, the robots will just have to avoid moving them while completing the same
objective as before.
To the left is the robot, as of 9/5/2005. The base was purchased from Lynx Motion. It has four
motors, one behind each wheel. It also has a manipulator, (claw) although, we are planning on
using a larger manipulator. On top sits the Xport Robot Controller. (XRC) It is the processor for
the robot. It is made up of the XRC board attached to a Gameboy Advance. It shall read from the
sensors and control the motors and manipulator. It will hold the code for the artificial intelligence.
We plan for the robot to have a camera and sonar to sense its environment.
