Overweight and obesity result from an energy imbalance. This involves
eating too many calories and not getting enough physical activity.
Body weight is the result of genes, metabolism, behavior, environment,
culture, and socioeconomic status.
Behavior and environment play a large role causing people to be
overweight and obese. These are the greatest areas for prevention and
treatment actions.

In this Cartoon, the waiter is
saying that he will be the
customers “enabler” for that
evening. He is saying this
because he assumes by
looking at them that they
will not be ordering off the
healthy side of the menu.
He figures he will be helping
them add to their already
overweight body’s.

The Cartoon displays irony
because even DIET food
needs to be eaten in correct
portions for a persons daily
calorie intake. In society
today, people that eat diet
foods are not considering
the portion size. They think
that if it is diet food its okay
to eat as much as they want.
However, diet foods are
meant to be eaten in specific
proportions and if that is not
done then the person is not
benefiting from the diet. The
cartoon shows that lots of
diet food is clearly not
healthy.

FACTS
• Americans spend more money eating fast food than
they do on education, personal computers, and even
cars.
• Americans spend more on fast food than movies,
books, magazines, newspapers, videos and CD’s
combined.
• The crazy thing is that most Americans know that fast
food is unhealthy and they would rather not eat it, but
since it is so fast and easy they still eat it.
• Now day’s parents even buy their kids fast food all the
time since they don’t want to cook.
• That is why there are so many overweight people in
America today
• America is one of the most overweight countries in the
world.

FACTS
• A lot of the companies can afford to make a dollar
menu because the ingredients are so cheap; if the
ingredients were not so bad for you they wouldn’t be
so cheap.
• In most fast food meals contain 1400 calories in one
meal. That is almost more calories than you are
suppose to eat in a day.
• In these meals they are high in fat but very poor in
fiber, vitamins A and C, and calcium.
• There are no antioxidants, omega 3 or vitamins found
in these products.
• In a survey only 6 percent of people eat fast food
because of the taste, the main reason they eat it is
because it’s fast.
• A lot of what is in fast food is not high in quality
• It is normally cheap processed food
Statistics
Two-thirds of U.S. adults are officially overweight, and
about half of those have graduated to full-blown
obesity. The rates for African Americans and Latinos
are even higher. Among kids between 6 and 19 years
old, 15%, or 1 in 6, are overweight, and another 15%
are headed that way. Even our pets are pudgy: a
depressing 25% of dogs and cats are heavier than they
should be.

Conclusion
From the data presented we can see that over the years obesity has
continued to be a problem. Larger portion sizes, excessive calorie intake, and a
decline in physical activity are all contributing factors in this epidemic. Obesity
is a contributor to chronic disease such as hypertension, high cholesterol and
heart disease. (American Heart Assoc.)
Many obese people have suffered from various diseases and
complication, some of which have learned to change their diet. The people,
who actually have the determination and a will to survive, have a high chance
to succeed in becoming healthy once again. Cutting out meat products, fastfoods, high sugar and sodium will point you in the right direction for a better,
healthy life. Also, you must incorporate whole grains, vegetables, and fruits
into a controlled diet in order to achieve the goal of being healthy and fit
again. However, it is not easy for obese people to cut their ties with unhealthy
food, though it is a necessity if they want to survive and live a healthy life.
