CELL THEORY
A theory resulting from many scientists’
observations & conclusions
CELL THEORY
1. The basic unit of life is the cell.
(Hooke)
In 1665, an English scientist
named Robert Hooke
made an improved
microscope and viewed thin
slices of cork viewing
plant cell walls
Hooke named what he saw
"cells"
CELL THEORY
2. All living things are made of 1 or more
cells.
Matthias Schleiden (botanist studying
plants)
Theodore Schwann (zoologist studying
animals) stated that all living things were
made of cells

3. All cells divide & come from old cells.
(Virchow)

Overview of Cell Structure
Cells vary in size,
shape and function
Control center of the
cell – Nucleus
Cell contains fluid
filled cytoplasm
Cell is surrounded by
a membrane
Eukaryotes vs. Prokaryotes
All life on Earth can be divided into 2
categories, depending on whether they
contain a nucleus.
Eukaryotes (do) and Prokaryotes (do not)
EUKARYOTES
The cells of a eukaryote are complex and
contain a nucleus and other membrane
bound structures.
Examples include: animals, plants,
protists, and fungi.
Eukaryotes are multicellular with the
EXCEPTION of protists and yeasts
(single-celled fungi)
EUKARYOTE
PROKARYOTES
They carry out every activity associated with
living things (growth, reproducting, respond to
stimuli…see characteristics page 16&17)
Are bacteria
Have a much simpler structure with no internal
membranes, and lack well defined nucleii
These simple prokaryotes colonized the Earth
2 billion years before Eukaryotes ever showed
up!!
