Highlights
• FO-4 has met twice since the last TC meeting
– June 2005 in Boulder, Colorado at NIST’s facilities
– January 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada
• Changes in the Engineering Committee
– Tom Robinson of Draka/Comteq elected as the new FO-4 Chair at
January meeting
– Tom Ball resigned as Chair of FO-4.3; Greg Sandels appointed ViceChair with Andre Girard
– FO-4.4 on active devices/reliability disbanded and rolled into FO-4.1
on Systems
• Attendance appears stable
– Attendees from Mexico, UK and Canada at our last two meetings

Recent FO-4 actions
• FO-4 has published several fiber optic cable standards
using a dual logo program under an MOU with ICEA
• FO-4.3 has applied for a Category D liaison with IEC SC86B
• FO-4.5 has established a formal liaison with TC86/WG4 on
Calibration
• Participation in the NIST Initiative on the US Measurement
System in Broadband Communications
– High Speed Optical Communication Systems
– Universal Broadband Access via Optical Fiber
– Transverse Compatibility in Fiber Optic Transport Networks

FO-4 needs
• Document maintenance remains a key challenge
– Delays in implementing committee requests
• Document processing
• Need forward pointers
• Need the ability to do group re-affirmations
– Need to do a better job of document action in subcommittee
• FO-4 continues to nationally adopt IEC Standards where
possible
– Issues with copyright impacted standard availability
• FO-4 remains open to co-locating meetings
