Sphere of Earth: A layer
that surrounds the Earth
Atmosphere: Shell of gases that surrounds a
planet, for example, Earth
a. Earth’s atmosphere is unique because it
contains oxygen
b. Atmosphere = Air
Lithosphere(also known as Geosphere): Solid
portion of Earth below the atmosphere and the
hydrosphere
a. Includes: rocks, mountains and beaches
Hydrosphere: Earth’s liquid water
a. Includes: oceans, lakes, streams and
groundwater
Biosphere: The portion of Earth that supports
life, from far down in the ocean to high up in the
sky
a. Plants and animals are part of the biosphere
Earth is the only known planet currently
supporting life due to the interactions among its
four spheres.
The four spheres of the Earth system are
constantly moving and changing
