The Magic School Bus
Inside the Earth

Have you ever wondered what it is like
inside of the earth? Did you know that
the inside of the earth is made of rocks
and minerals?
Today you will take a journey with Mrs.
Frizzle and her class to explore the
inside of the earth and find answers to
questions that you may have.
Materials
• A copy of The Magic School Bus Inside
the Earth by Joanna Cole
• A computer with internet access
• Recording sheets
• Pencil
• Crayons or colored pencils
Before Reading
1. Before you begin your journey to the inside of the
earth, write down at least 3 facts that you already
know about rocks and minerals.
2. Next, click on the picture and read about how 3 types
of rocks are formed and examples of different types
of rocks found inside of the earth.
3. Finally, write down at least 3 questions that you have
about rocks and minerals or about the inside of the
earth.
Your journey is now about to begin!
During Reading
• If you find answers to your questions
while you are reading, write
them down on your sheet.
• On the chart provided, write down any
information you find about sedimentary,
metamorphic or igneous rocks including
how they are formed and examples of
each type.
After Reading
• Look back into the book and choose 3
kinds of rocks.
• For each rock:
– Draw and color a picture of it
– Tell what type of rock it is (igneous, metamorphic,
sedimentary)
– Write about one way it could be used
