Solubility
Definitions
Mixture
A physical combination of elements and/or
compounds.
Components keep their identity
Definitions
– Homogeneous- Consistent composition
within the sample (Solution)
Coke, Gatorade, air
– Heterogeneous- Different composition
within same sample
Blood, pizza, rocks
Parts of a Solution
Solute
– Part which is dissolved- usually solid
Solvent
– Part in which solute is dissolved- usually liquid
Precipitate
– Undissolved solid
How much is dissolved?
Saturated
– No more solute can be dissolved
Unsaturated
– More can be dissolved
Supersaturated
– More solute is added than can be dissolvedPrecipitate forms
Concentration
How much solute is dissolved in a solvent
Expressed in g/cm3
How does this differ from density since
density uses the same unit?
Density refers to one substance, while
concentration refers to two.
Divide mass of solute by volume of solvent
to determine concentration
Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that can
be dissolved in a solvent.
The concentration of a saturated solution
Expressed in g/100cm3
Multiply concentration by 100
Is a Characteristic property of the solute in
that solvent.
Dependent on temperature
Other definitions
Soluble
– Can be dissolved
Insoluble
Mixtures of gases and
liquids
Miscible
– Can be mixed
– Cannot be dissolved
Immiscible
– Cannot be mixed
