• First Flap – Parts of an Atom
• 2nd Flap - Atom
– Smallest part that an element can be divided
into and still be the same substance
• 3rd Flap - Neutron
– Neutral particle – no charge
– Found inside nucleus
– Makes up ½ an atom’s mass
• 4th flap - Proton
– Proton – positively (+) charged
– Found inside nucleus
– Makes up the other ½ of the atom’s mass
• 5th Flap – Atomic Number
– The # of protons called the atomic number,
determines the elements identity!
• 6th Flap – Electron
– Negatively (-) charged
– Found outside nucleus in the electron cloud
– Electrons have very little mass and no effect
on the atom’s overall atomic mass
• 7th Flap - Bonding
– Electrons are responsible for an elements
ability to form bonds

– Atomic mass = # of Protons + # of neutrons
– Neutrons = atomic mass - # of protons
– Atomic # = # of protons = # of electrons
