Physical and Chemical
Properties
Lesson 1:
The Periodic Table
Vocabulary of Instruction:
1. Periodic Table
• Is a chart
with all the
chemical
elements
organized by
increasing
atomic
number.
2. Metals
• An element
that easily
gives up its
valence
electrons in a
chemical
reaction and
that can be
classified on its
physical
properties
3. Nonmetals
• An element
which is dullcolored, brittle
and nonconductor of
electricity or
heat. It usually
gain or share
valence
electrons in a
chemical
reaction.
4. Metalloids
• An element which
contain properties
of both metals and
nonmetals in terms
of malleability,
ductility,
conductivity, and
luster.
5. Group
• A set of
elements
comprising a
vertical
column of the
periodic table.
There are 18
groups in the
Periodic
Table.
Group
6. Period
• A set of
elements
comprising a
horizontal
row of the
periodic table.
There are 7
periods in
the Periodic
Table.
7. Family
• A group
(vertical
column) of
elements
with
similar
chemical
properties.
8. Shell / Energy Level
• Is the outside part of
an atom around the
atomic nucleus. In
general, elements in
the same group
contain the same
number of valence
electrons and
elements in the same
period contain that
number of shells.
