What is the Periodic Table of Elements?????
By:Jasmine C.
Do you wonder sometimes what the periodic
table of elements really is? Where it came
from? Or even how it is used in the world
today? Well I have all the answers here in my
power point. It is filled with all the answers to
theses questions and many more!!!!!

What is the Periodic Table
Elements????
You ask such intelligent questions my friend! The periodic table is
one of the most important tools you will need next year when you
take chemistry. It was designed by a Russian chemist in 1869 by the
name of Dimitri Mendeleev. The periodic table arranges all the
elements in columns and rows in order of increasing atomic
number. The columns are known as periods and the rows are
known as groups. The design of the periodic table has been revised
and other elements have been added since the first periodic table,
but is still similar to the first one.
Periods
• Horizontal in the periodic table.
• Some of the properties found in
the elements are the same.
• The d & f block of the periods
are very similar in many ways.
Groups
•
•
•
•
Also referred to as a family.
A vertical column in periodic table of elements.
The most important way of identifying the elements.
In the group the elements in them share the same
properties.
• Groups that share the same properties happened to
not have scientific names, for example: alkaline
metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, and noble
gases.

Atoms-The smallest particle of an
element that can be identified with the
element.
Element-A substance made of only one
kind of atom.
Molecules-Two or more atoms of the
same or different elements bonded to
form a larger particle.
Compound-A chemical substance made
of atoms of two or more different
elements combined.
Chemical Formula-A description that
uses numbers and symbols of elements
to describe the proportions of elements
in a compound or reaction.
Nucleus-The positively charged center
of an atom.(contains protons and
neutrons)

Neutrons-Nucleons in an electrically
neutral state.
Protons-A positively charged particle
that is one of the two kinds of particles
found in the nucleus of an atom.
IsotopesAtomic Number-Number of protons in
the nucleus of an atom.
Ion-An atom with a net electric charge.
Periodic Table-A chart that lists
elements by atomic number and by
electron arrangements.
Group-Elements in the same column of
the Periodic table.
Nucleons-The principal building block
of the nucleus; a neutron or a proton

Basic info on some
elements!!!!
Sodium
• Never found free in nature
• Soft, bright, silver, metal
• Floats on water
• Atomic number 11
• Melting Point 97.8?C
Magnesium
• Light weighted
• Silvery/white
• Metal
• When burning it has a white
flame
• Atomic number 12
Iron
• Very hard
• Used to make steel
• The pure metal is very reactive
• Atomic number 26
• Melting point 1538?C
Lead
• Blue/white metal
• Extremely soft
• Poor conductor of electricity
• Used around x-ray machinery to
blockade radiation.
The uses of the periodic table of
elements!!!!
People that are familiar with the periodic table of
elements can determine:
• The atomic mass
• The atomic mass to find how many carbon atoms
there is in a 1 kilogram block of carbon.
• The way certain elements react.
• The name of the element if its an Alkali metal, Alkali
Earth metal, Nobel gases, Transition metals, Halogens,
Rare Earth metals, Synthetic, Gas, liquid, or solids.
What do the people really know????
As apart of my project I had to go and ask people,
what the periodic table of elements is? This is a graph
of the responses that I received.
