By: Jose Tapay & Gurleen Dhaliwal
Biography
 Born in England in 1891
 Died July 24 1974
 Attended Manchester University in 1908
 Graduated from the Honours School of Physics in 1911
 Chadwick's research focused on radioactivity
 Enrolled in Ernest Rutherford’s classes on
electricity and magnetism
Idea of the Atom
 In 1932- discovered a third type of subatomic
particle, which Chadwick named the neutron
Neutrons…
 Stabilize the protons in the atom's nucleus.
 Help to reduce the repulsion between protons
 Do not have any electrical charge
Experiments
Existence of the Neutron:
 Smashed an alpha particle into beryllium releasing radiation into
paraffin wax.
 Beryllium radiation hit the hydrogen atoms
 Discovered neutral particles (neutrons)
Major Scientific Contribution
 The neutron enabled scientists to produce new elements
 It also led to the discovery of nuclear fission
 Helped to make the atomic bomb during WW11
 Nobel Prize in 1935.
