By: Jose Tapay & Gurleen Dhaliwal
Biography
Born in England in 1891
Died July 24 1974
Attended Manchester University in 1908
Graduated from the Honours School of Physics in 1911
Chadwick's research focused on radioactivity
Enrolled in Ernest Rutherford’s classes on
electricity and magnetism
Idea of the Atom
In 1932- discovered a third type of subatomic
particle, which Chadwick named the neutron
Neutrons…
Stabilize the protons in the atom's nucleus.
Help to reduce the repulsion between protons
Do not have any electrical charge
Experiments
Existence of the Neutron:
Smashed an alpha particle into beryllium releasing radiation into
paraffin wax.
Beryllium radiation hit the hydrogen atoms
Discovered neutral particles (neutrons)
Major Scientific Contribution
The neutron enabled scientists to produce new elements
It also led to the discovery of nuclear fission
Helped to make the atomic bomb during WW11
Nobel Prize in 1935.
